The Long Exhale

A professional training in sustainable care for the people who take care of everyone else.

You got into this work because you care.

And caring, done well, over years, in systems that were not built to support the people inside them — costs something. You know this already. You feel it at the end of a long shift, a long week, a long year. The heaviness that doesn't fully lift on your days off. The part of you that keeps going back even when you're running on empty, because the people who need you don't stop needing you just because you're depleted.

The Long Exhale was built for you.

Not as a checkbox. Not as a one-time morale boost that everyone forgets by Monday. As a real, clinically grounded, practically useful training in what it actually takes to sustain a life of caring for others — without losing yourself in the process.

What The Long Exhale Is

The Long Exhale is a professional wellness training offered to teams, organizations, and groups of people in helping roles. It was developed and is facilitated by Olivia Mackley, MA, LMFT, PMH-C — a licensed therapist with over a decade of clinical experience across hospitals, schools, community health settings, and private practice.

This is not a lecture. It is not a slideshow of statistics about burnout followed by a list of self-care tips. It is an experiential, participatory training that gives people real tools — grounded in neuroscience, trauma-informed care, and clinical research — and the space to actually practice using them.

The Long Exhale is designed for anyone in a helping or caregiving role:

  • Healthcare teams — nurses, physicians, hospital staff, allied health professionals

  • School staff — teachers, counselors, social workers, administrators

  • Mental health clinicians and therapists

  • Social workers and case managers

  • First responders

  • HR professionals and organizational leaders

  • Nonprofit and community organizations

  • Anyone whose work involves showing up for others, day after day

If your job asks you to hold space for other people's hardest moments — this training was made with you in mind.

What You Leave With

The Long Exhale is built around five core areas — each one grounded in research, each one immediately applicable to real life:

Understanding Your Nervous System Why you feel the way you feel at the end of a hard day — and what is actually happening in your body when you're depleted, flooded, or running on adrenaline. Understanding the biology of stress is the first step toward working with it instead of against it.

Compassion Fatigue and Burnout — What They Really Are The difference between compassion fatigue, burnout, and moral injury — how they develop, how they show up, and why willpower alone doesn't fix them. You cannot think your way out of a nervous system problem.

Regulation — Tools That Actually Work Practical, evidence-based tools for nervous system regulation that can be used in the middle of a workday, between patients, before a hard conversation, or at the end of a shift. Not bubble baths. Real tools.

Sustainable Boundaries in Helping Roles What boundaries actually are — and are not — in professional caregiving contexts. How to stay present and deeply caring without carrying what isn't yours to carry. How to leave work at work without leaving your humanity there too.

Building a Personal Sustainability Plan Every participant leaves with a concrete, individualized plan for sustainable practice — not a generic list of recommendations, but something built around their specific role, their specific challenges, and their actual life.

How We Work Together

The Long Exhale is available in two formats, both fully facilitated by Olivia and customized to your team, your setting, and your specific needs.

Half-Day Training Approximately 3–4 hours · $1,200–$2,000

The half-day format covers the essential framework — nervous system education, compassion fatigue and burnout, regulation tools, and personal sustainability planning — in a condensed, high-impact session. Ideal for staff days, retreat mornings, department meetings with extended time, or organizations looking to introduce this work without a full-day commitment.

Includes participant workbooks and take-home materials.

Full-Day Training Approximately 6–7 hours · $2,000–$2,800

The full-day format allows for deeper exploration of each module, more time for experiential exercises and group processing, and a more fully developed personal sustainability plan. Recommended for teams who want to do real work together — not just receive information, but actually use it. Includes a midday break, participant workbooks, and take-home materials.

Custom and Multi-Session Engagements For organizations interested in ongoing programming, a multi-session series, or a training customized to a specific population or presenting challenge — Olivia is available for custom engagements. Pricing and structure are developed collaboratively based on your needs.

All formats are available on-site at your location or at an agreed upon venue.
